Resident Knowledge: Chiang Mai’s Naree Kurata
August 19th, 2008Chiang Mai, Thailand -Â Bangkok native Naree Kurata moved to Chiang Mai six years ago to raise her two children and open a business while her husband, a Japanese businessman, was traveling for work. She runs the tranquil shop TreeHouse, which houses modern Lanna objects in a rebuilt Thai-style house that has a longan tree growing through it. The couple, who met in the US while pursuing MBAs, thought there was a dearth of quality collectibles for tourists in Chiang Mai and began gathering unique textiles, ceramics, and paintings to meet the need.
Naree loves phad thai, kua kai (wide rice noodles), som tom (papaya salad), among many, many other things. She recommends eating at Come Dara, a riverside restaurant at 193 Charoenrat Road, and a no-name noodle joint just south of her shop also on Charoenrat. When asked what we should try while in town, she responded “Thai food.” A solid answer.
