Chatiee Sakchatieechan

Chatiee Sakchatieechan has lived in Mae Hong Son his whole life. A former teacher, Chatiee started making Thai desserts with his wife and her sister when he retired 10 years ago. Though he mostly eats meals at home, Chatiee recommends the dinner (or evening) market that is held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Th Phanit Wattana up the street from the produce market. Chatiee’s no-name dessert and juice shop is on Th Singharat near Th Phaditjongeume and he was kind enough to give me a little Thai dessert 101.

Hanon Tan
Khanom Tan – A mixture of coconut milk, palm sap, rice flour, sugar and shredded coconut that is steamed in banana leaf cups.

Fuksankaya
Fuksankaya – Pumpkin filled with a mixture of eggs, sugar and rice flour and cooked.

Khanom Sod Sai
Khanom Sod Sai – A mixture of rice flour, coconut milk and sugar surrounding a center of shredded coconut and palm sugar that is steamed in banana leaves.

Khanom Kluay
Khanom Kluay – Steamed mixture of banana, rice flour, coconut milk, shredded coconut and sugar.

Nam Mafuang
