A Watery Lunch

Sausage and Roast Pork Over Rice

Either I’ve become extremely good at picking the wrong places to eat or there’s a dearth of decent eats in Siem Reap.  In any case, save a summer roll eaten on the sidewalk outside the Royal Gardens, I was pretty underwhelmed at all the street stalls, market breakfast stalls and Cambodian-only joints I tried.  Things weren’t bad per se; they just weren’t that good.

It took traveling out of town by boat for four hours before I actually found something.  En route from Siem Reap to Battambang, we stopped for lunch at one of the floating villages.  I got pork and sweet sausage on rice, which was simple and good, but my friend got a fragrant fish soup loaded with bamboo.  Light and spicy, it danced in your mouth.  I was a bit jealous of her order, but it was good to know that the stuff was out there.  Bellies full, we reboarded the boat, spending the rest of the day above the water and under the sun watching village life pass by.
