Khanom Bust
November 7th, 2008Khanom
Bangkok, Thailand – Today I thought I would get my parents out of the city and bring them to a more laid-back place. I’d never been to the island Ko Kret, but it sure sounded nice – no cars, Mon pottery, old-style Thai houses and plenty of khanom (Thai desserts and snacks). Unfortunately, several uncomfortable boats, a few sessions of haggling, and one flooded island later, we were looking at some pretty sad khanom. It was a total bust and a poor showing for my parents who are only here for a week. I plan to make it up tomorrow.
Of all the places I’ve visited, recommended or not, some of the best-looking, whistle-worthy khanom I’ve seen is in Prahurat market, Little India’s congested and seemingly endless market, which is home to textiles and a variety of cheap goods. Pink stickers, nail clippers, bras, and watches – it’s all there. Shoulder-to-shoulder, you have to push your way through the center aisle, with open-front stores on either side and every few paces there’s a food stall of some sort selling cut fruit, curries, crackers or khanom. Improbably, the occasional motorbike makes its way through. I nearly lost a few toes while eating watermelon off a stick once. Thank god I got health insurance before coming to Thailand. Thank god the eats are worth the traffic.
