Market Off the Beaten Path
January 28th, 2009Boiled Eggs with Chilies, Shallot and Cilantro
Bangkok, Thailand – And yet another market reveals itself. This one, on Rama III Soi 44, I always thought was just the front part of a soi, but for the first time today I walked back to the end of the soi and the market kept going and going through backstreets and lots, including two huge food courts and many more stalls. It’s not on any must-go market list, but I did get to see the preparation process of making several items that I had previously only seen in completed form – Thai doughnuts, the sweet sesame peanut snacks and khanom tuay (a coconut pudding steamed in a shallow ceramic dish). Plus, this market sold everything from dresses and underwear to cell phones and watches to makeup pads. I’ve always wondered who’s buying this stuff at 7 a.m., but I ended up picking up some makeup pads because, well, I needed them. I swear that anyone visiting Thailand should ditch the lists, take a taxi to a residential area in the early morning and then wander around until you find a market. That could be the best or worst advice someone will give you for a trip.
