Sweet Road to the Rapids

Maprow Kaew (Northeastern Coconut Candy)

Kaeng Khut Khu, Thailand – Specific to Kaeng Khut Khu, rapids just 5 km north of Chiang Khan, and not even in town, is maprow kaew, chewy, sweet slices of coconut that have been cooked in sugar syrup.  At the rapids themselves, vendors are selling the candy, but it’s slightly more expensive than buying it roadside.  All along the hot, dusty road leading to the rapids women (and the odd fellow) sit outside slicing and cooking coconut, surrounded by heaps of coconut shells, for this addictive sweet snack.  When I stopped at one place to take pictures, the women there approved my pictures, laughed and told me that I was suay mahk mahk (very beautiful).  Barely believable considering I was covered with half a day’s worth of sweat and dust, but it was sweet and I’ll take it…along with a few bags of maprow kaew.
