Khanom in Pahurat Market
April 27th, 2009Bangkok, Thailand – Just inside the entrance of Prahurat market, the seemingly endless textile market in Little India, on Thanon Chakphet on the right hand side is a friendly khanom (Thai snack) vendor, Som Si. She also has small table of custards, jellies and cakes tucked in front of one of the textile vendors. There’s wun gati, a bi-level treat with a bottom layer of green, pandanus-colored jelly and a white coconut cream top. Khanom moh gaeng, an egg custard sweetened with palm sugar somewhat reminiscent of flan, but with an earthier depth from taro. And one of my favorites is khanom babin, a chewy square of coconut cake made with the usual suspects rice flour, palm sugar, coconut milk and shredded coconut meat. It’s quite simple, but also quite delicious.
