Black Diamond Cupcakes
Bangkok, Thailand – Finally a bakery in Bangkok that produces tasty Western goods. While most of the city’s baking stores turn out products that are universally dry, often over-sweetened and sometimes betray chemical undertones, 4-month-old Sparkles on Sukhumvit 53 is relying on ultra-fresh, premium ingredients to make cupcakes, tarts and cookies that sing. The store is owned by Sophie, a bubbly Thai-American who grew up in California and moved back to her parents’ homeland a few years ago with her husband. Thank god she did. Cupcakes are moist. Cookies are cakey. And lemon bars are lemony. After thinking I’d never find a decent crumb in Thailand (believe me, I tried), I’ve been proven wrong.
