Quick Bites: Crispy, Crunchy Indian Snacks
May 18th, 2009
Bangkok, Thailand – A waft of this fried nibble is head-turning. They’re also irresistible; I saw one man pull a few from the pot as he waited 15 seconds for his bag. Sanitary? Not really. Understable? Completely.
Right in front of 203 Pahurat (in between Burapha and Chakphret) is a little cart with the Islam crescent moon and star hand painted in sky blue on a little cardboard sign. “Indian snacks,” the vendor told me as he bagged some up along with with whole dried chilies and a thick, spicy peanut sauce. “Green peanuts,” he said as I circled the cart asking about the mash of batter he was dropping into the hot, dark oil. “Bar yee-ar,” he said grabbing my pen to write down the snack’s name in Thai and English after my hearing skills proved to be patience-testing.
“A roy (delicious),” I said before moving on.
