Doner Kebap Bahn My Cart
Hanoi, Vietnam – I suppose when I got to Vietnam I expected all the bahn mi there to both replicate and exceed the best ones I’d had in New York. There’s a place out in Sunset Park, Brooklyn called Ba Xuyên, originally recommended to me by Andrew Knowlton of Bon Appetit, that I quite like. However, when I got to Hanoi, there was a wide range of bahn mi places, some that served super simple ones with just pate, others had fried eggs and still others offered canned beef (which I didn’t dare try). I got a fair sampling of some disappointing bahn mi, but one of the ones I liked was the doner kebap bahn mi on corner of Pho Hang Buom in the Old Quarter. Warm spiced kebap meat, cilantro, pickled cabbage, a squirt of mayo and chili on a warmly toasted baguette was enough to make me happy.
